Streszczenie

The spreading of pathogenic agents (including bacteria, fungi, viruses) represents a serious threat to human health causing also an economic burden. Food contamination by Salmonella enterica or Listeria monocytogenes or COVID-19 disease by SARS-CoV-2 are just few relevant cases risen in the last years. In our group, we devoted our research to the design of novel effective solutions in the form of nanostructured materials as alternative to more conventional antibiotics/antimicrobial drugs. We mainly synthesized copper, silver, and zinc oxide nanostructures (NSs) by electrochemical routes implementing green and scalable approaches. Different strategies based on eco-friendly methods were also adopted to prepare biocompatible, non-toxic (nano)antimicrobials. In this contribution, some successful examples of (nano)antimicrobial development will be illustrated emphasizing the advantages of electrochemical sol-gel and precipitation routes. Moreover, the morphological and spectroscopic characterization of the proposed materials will be presented, highlighting the importance of structure, surface composition, and metal ion release. Finally, applications in food packaging, antiviral/antibacterial coatings, stone artwork preservation will be overviewed.
