Seminarium naukowe Akademickiego Centrum Materiałów i Nanotechnologii AGH

Serdecznie zapraszamy na pierwsze seminarium naukowe Akademickiego Centrum Materiałów i Nanotechnologii AGH (ACMiN), na którym Prof. Dr. Saw Wai Hla wygłosi referat pt. „Frontiers of Nanoscience: Playing with Atoms and Molecules”.

Prof. Dr. Saw W. Hla pracuje w Physics and Astronomy Department, Ohio University w Athens (USA). Równocześnie jest liderem Electronic and Magnetic Materials and Devices Group, Nanoscience and Technology Division w Argonne National Laboratory (USA). Prof. Hla zajmuje się nanofizyką i nanoinżynierią, a obiektem jego naukowych zainteresowań są pojedyncze atomy.

Seminarium, organizowane wspólnie z Wydziałem Fizyki i Informatyki Stosowanej AGH, odbędzie się w Sali Wykładowej A w pawilonie D-10, ul. Reymonta 19, w piątek, 14 czerwca b.r., o godz. 12:15.

Streszczenie referatu

 

"Frontiers of Nanoscience: Playing with Atoms and Molecules" - Saw Wai Hla

Scanning tunneling microscope (STM) manipulation of single atoms and molecules on surfaces have enabled construction of novel quantum structures on an atom-by-atom basis and demonstration of single molecule devices on a one molecule at-a-time basis. STM is not only an instrument used to ‘see’ individual atoms by means of imaging, but also a tool used to ‘touch’ and ‘take’ atoms/molecules or to ‘hear’ their vibration by manipulations. Therefore, STM can be considered as the ‘eyes’, ‘hands’ and ‘ears’ of the scientists connecting our macroscopic world to the exciting atomic and nanoscopic world. In our research projects, we combine STM manipulation schemes with a variety of tunneling spectroscopy measurements to investigate properties specific to the type of atoms/molecules. These innovative experiments are tailored to address several critical issues covering both fundamental understanding of atom manipulation mechanisms, and realization of monomolecular switches and devices. In this talk, several examples of STM manipulations will be presented. The presentation will include construction of artificial structures atom-by-atom basis, manipulation of plant molecules to demonstrate multiple switching behaviors, manipulation of nanoscale superconducting rafts, operation of nanoscale molecular machines, and  manipulation and sequencing of proteins [1-5]. Some of the demonstrations will be presented by showing atomic scale movies.
