Cyfronet receives funding to develop Poland’s supercomputing and cloud infrastructure

Two key projects submitted by the AGH University Academic Computer Centre Cyfronet under Measure 2.4 of the European Funds for a Modern Economy 2021–2027 programme have been selected for funding. The achievement represents a major boost for Poland’s advanced computing infrastructure and cloud technologies.

The National Supercomputing Infrastructure for EuroHPC – AQUILA will be undertaken by a consortium of leading Polish computing and research centres, drawing on decades of experience in developing and operating advanced infrastructure for Polish science. Led by Cyfronet, the project also includes:

  • Wroclaw Centre for Networking and Supercomputing
  • Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Centre
  • CI TASK, Gdańsk University of Technology
  • Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling, University of Warsaw
  • National Centre for Nuclear Research
  • Institute of Theoretical and Applied Informatics, Polish Academy of Sciences
  • The Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Centre, Polish Academy of Sciences.

Backed by more than PLN 213 million in funding, the project will deliver Poland’s first Hybrid Quantum-Classical Computing (HQCC) platform, bringing together quantum and classical supercomputing technologies.

The second project, National Cloud Infrastructure PLGrid for EOSC HUB, will be carried out by a consortium of six high-performance computing centres. In addition to Cyfronet, which serves as the project leader, the consortium comprises:

  • Wroclaw Centre for Networking and Supercomputing
  • Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Centre
  • CI TASK, Gdańsk University of Technology
  • Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling, University of Warsaw
  • National Centre for Nuclear Research.

The secured funding, amounting to more than PLN 167 million, will enable the development and deployment of cloud infrastructure, together with the system facilities and services required for its operation.

The implementation of both projects marks an important milestone in the development of the national research infrastructure, providing an array of new opportunities for Polish scientists and entrepreneurs in the fields of data processing and simulation.
