Conflict resolution

AGH University is committed to fostering a respectful and supportive academic environment and encourages early, constructive dialogue when concerns arise.

To promote this approach, the University provides measures to facilitate conflict resolution, such as contact with the Equality Ombudsperson and access to mediation.

Mediation

On 1 January 2026, the first Mediation Team in the history of the University was appointed.

The appointment of the Team results from the provisions of the AGH University Mediation Regulations introduced by Order No. 46/2025 of the AGH University Rector and is part of the implementation of the equal treatment policy at AGH University. The Mediation Regulations and the appointment of the Mediation Team are the result of the work of: Equality Team, Joanna Zawisza (Rector’s Office), and Artur Lesner, AGH University Equality Ombudsperson.

What does a mediator do?

A mediator is someone who assists conflicting parties in reaching an agreement and resolving a difficult situation. All information obtained by the mediator in the course of mediation remains confidential. The mediator does not propose a specific solution to address the problem, nor do they impose the way of resolving the matter. They ensure that each person involved can speak freely and present their expectations.

What are the benefits of mediation?

  • Speed of the procedure – mediation is a much faster way to resolve conflicts than formal disciplinary and court proceedings.
  • Conciliation – mediation is entered into only when all interested parties agree to it.
  • Confidentiality – all participants in mediation are required to keep the proceedings confidential.
  • Win-win – the aim of mediation is to reach an outcome that satisfied both sides. In mediation, there are no winners and losers. It is intended to be a solution to a difficult situation that allows for further cooperation.

How do I initiate the mediation process at AGH University?

The mediator is appointed by the AGH University Rector on a written request of the following:

  • parties in question (joint request or with the consent of the other parties)
  • Disciplinary Commissioner for Academic Teachers
  • Equality Ombudsperson
  • Committee for counteracting mobbing and unequal treatment.

Mediation is offered to all: students, administration, and academic staff.
