More than million PLN in grants for student projects

A field robot, waste recycling, flowerpot for the rushed, mapping of an aging brain, mobile wind turbine laboratory, research stand for ventilation devices, research stand for healthy and disabled canine gait analysis, production line for obtaining construction materials under Martian conditions, automated assistant aiding mountaineers in rescue missions… This is just a portion of AGH UST student ideas that will receive funding in the Rector’s Grant competition this year. Nearly 100 multifarious projects will receive grants; the total amount of money from the competition is PLN 1,192,465.

Of 119 applications, 10 have been awarded the status of a strategic project and, as a result, the highest grant sums. The jury of the competition has decided that more than PLN 110,000 will go to a project carried out by the AGH UST Solar Boat Student Research Club (SRC), which focuses on developing propulsion and control systems of a solar speedboat, as well as testing its construction in open sea. Another financially appreciated solutions, which received more than PLN 70,000, are those proposed by the AGH UST Eko-Energia SRC in the field of collecting energy from wind turbines, and the AGH UST Space Systems SRC in the field of perfecting the subsystems of the existing planetary rover.

‘The élan and thematic scope of the projects carried out by our Student Research Clubs does not cease to amaze. Each year we see more and more truly revolutionary endeavours in every field. At the AGH UST, we lend financial support to projects in renewable energy sources, tools for medicine, or solutions that facilitate day-to-day functioning. I have no doubt that the money we invest in the development of our students will yield benefits in the future. Young people working in student research clubs earn practical knowledge, create award-winning solutions praised worldwide, and construct tools used in the automotive industry or space exploration. I am convinced that the experience gained during their studies and in implementing their complex and advanced projects will prove beneficial already in the course of their education or shortly after graduation, when they will be, for example, establishing their own first companies or start-ups’, emphasised Professor Jerzy Lis, the AGH UST Rector.

The AGH UST Student Research Clubs have requested an exceptionally high amount of research money this year: more than PLN 3,500,000 in total (compared to the amount from 2021: PLN 1,700,000, which represents an increase of more than 100%).

Funding has been granted to 97 submissions and amounts to PLN 1,192,465 (compared to the 2021 edition: PLN 900,000, which represents an increase of more than 30%). As long as the financial capabilities of the university continue to grow, the Rector’s Grant competition will also be developed in 2022.
