UNIVERSEH granted funding for another four years

The UNIVERSEH consortium, of which the AGH University is a member, has been awarded funding to continue its activities in the years 2024–2027. The grant was awarded by the European Commission as part of the "European Universities" Erasmus+ programme.

UNIVERSEH "European Space University for Earth and Humanity" was established in 2020 as an international alliance of five European universities. Alongside the AGH University, the alliance included the University of Toulouse (France), the University of Luxembourg (Luxembourg), Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (Germany), and Luleå University of Technology (Sweden). In December 2022, two more universities joined the consortium: the University of Namur (Belgium) and Tor Vergata University of Rome (Italy).

The consortium partners collaborate in the broad field of the space sector and space technologies. They provide education and conduct research in this area.

The obtained funding will enable further development of education, science, and technologies related to the exploration and utilisation of space, with a particular focus on innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, linguistic and cultural diversity, integration, and sustainable development.

"At UNIVERSEH, we prioritize providing an exceptional and cutting-edge learning environment that remains sustainable and agile. (…) Together, we will shape the future of space education and create a thriving ecosystem of knowledge, innovation, and opportunity," reads the statement on the UNIVERSEH website regarding the extension of funding.

Among the initiatives undertaken by the AGH University as part of UNIVERSEH are "Language Cafés", the GEODATA hackathon, and a series of seminars, as well as activities aimed at young people (Space Day, online space meetings). Teaching activities have been launched for 12 subjects related to space technologies (these courses have been included in the University Database of Electives). Additionally, AGH representatives participate in international competitions, meetings, conferences, and congresses.

European Universities are international partnerships of higher education institutions that are intended to be "European universities of the future". The term "universities" should be understood in the broadest sense – it encompasses all types of higher education institutions. A European University project must involve a minimum of three higher education institutions from at least three EU member states or other countries taking part in the programme.

As a result of the call for proposals under the "European Universities" Erasmus+ initiative for the year 2023, 30 new international university partnerships were selected (PDF file), bringing the total number of European Universities to 50, and comprising 430 institutions of higher education.
