Professor Wojciech Górecki – AGH UST Honorary Professor

Professor Wojciech Górecki – a specialist in the field of oil and gas exploration, as well as the recognition and use of geothermal waters and energy, who has been associated with our university for decades – received the title of Honorary Professor awarded by his Alma Mater. The ceremony took place on December 17, 2021 at the AGH UST.The title was awarded for exceptional achievements in the fields of research, educational, and organisational activities in oil and geothermal studies, as well as for the leading role in the establishment of the AGH UST Centre of Sustainable Development and Conservation of Energy in Miękinia, Poland.

‘For the past years, you have been elevating the prestige of AGH UST. You have always supported young scientists, showing them the right way and sharing your extensive experience with them. On this special occasion, we want to express our gratitude for your effort and dedication’, emphasised Professor Jerzy Lis, the AGH UST Rector, in his speech, also mentioning the most important facts related to Professor Górecki’s activity, highlighting his merits in the field of modern oil geology and optimisation of oil exploration.

Professor Jacek Matyszkiewicz, Dean of the Faculty of Geology, Geophysics, and Environmental Protection, who submitted the application for the conferral of the title on Professor Górecki, also took the floor:

‘In particular, I want to highlight Professor Górecki’s merits in the fields of science, education, and organisation for the Faculty of Geology, Geophysics, and Environmental Protection and for our university. The title of AGH UST Honorary Professor constitutes a token of appreciation for Professor Wojciech Górecki for his versatile and extensive academic achievement and his superior activity in the field of science and education’.

The life, research and scientific, educational, social, and organisational  achievements of the Honorary Professor were recounted by Professor Tadeusz Peryt from the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute.

‘The evaluation of Professor Wojciech Górecki’s achievements is an honour and a great pleasure. His life has been brimming with wonderful events and achievements, making it difficult to pinpoint those that merit special attention. For he is a scholar with enormous scientific achievement, supported by numerous publications in the form of monographs, articles, books, didactic academic books, monographic atlases, and a variety of geological maps. He is the creator of a scientific school encompassing oil geology and geothermics. His achievements are well-known and recognised in Poland and abroad. Numerous international awards and distinctions (including the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of foreign universities) are proof of that’, said the laudator.

After the ceremonial presentation of the diploma and insignia, Professor Wojciech Górecki gave a lecture titled Oil and Gas: Present and Future.

In conclusion to the ceremony, Professor Tadeusz Telejko, the AGH UST Vice-Rector for General Affairs, read a congratulatory letter addressed to the laureate by the undersecretary of state in the Ministry of Climate and a Chief Geologist of Poland, Piotr Dziadzio.
