Innovative projects by AGH University scientists and students rewarded in “Krakow without Barriers” competition

Innovative polymer implants for treating eye cancers and a prototype of a personalized prosthetic foot made with 3D technology are projects from the AGH University that have been recognised and awarded in the “Krakow without Barriers” competition in the “innovative technologies and innovative research projects” category.

An original technology for 3D printing polymer inserts for ocular applicators is a solution used in the treatment of intraocular tumours, including malignant eye tumours – choroidal melanomas. The main award for the development of this method was received by the representatives of the research team which consists of AGH University scientists as well as medical physicists and doctors from the Clinic of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Oncology of the University Hospital in Krakow.

Distinguished in the competition, the personalised prosthetic foot designed for wall climbing was developed by the AGH Rapid Prototyping Student Research Group operating at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics. The solution was a response to the needs of Kamil Warchol, a student at the AGH University, who, as a result of a foot amputation, used a properly fitted prosthesis, which, however, did not fully allow him to practice his favourite sport.

The results of the 16th edition of the “Krakow without Barriers” competition were announced and the laureates and persons with distinctions for 2022 were honoured during a ceremonial gala that took place on October 26. The awards were presented by Andrzej Kulig, deputy mayor of Krakow. The chairperson of the jury was Dr hab. Barbara Gąciarz, associate professor at the AGH University, Rector's Proxy for People with Disabilities.

The competition “Krakow without Barriers” is organised by the Department of Social Policy and Health of the Municipality of Krakow. The undertaking promotes individuals, institutions, and companies that take action to make it easier for people with disabilities to function in Krakow. Initially, the idea of the competition was to promote modern solutions in architecture and construction, which would increase the friendliness of buildings and public spaces for all residents, including people with various types of disabilities. The main goal was to draw attention to the issues related to accessibility and the removal of architectural barriers. Nowadays, in addition to the area related to construction and architecture, the competition awards individuals, companies, organisations, and research teams that with their innovative actions promote Krakow and make the lives of people with disabilities more comfortable and better.
