First prize in the 19th edition of the ABB competition for an AGH UST scientist

A doctoral dissertation of an employee from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science, and Biomedical Engineering won the first prize (PLN 30,000) in the 19th edition of the ABB competition for the best dissertations.

The winning paper is titled Medical image registration methods focused on the problem of missing data. Its author is Dr Marek Wodziński and the supervisor – AGH UST Professor Andrzej Skalski, both employees of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science, and Biomedical Engineering.

The doctoral dissertation proposes a series of innovative methods, based primarily on artificial intelligence and deep learning, to register medical images with missing data. The methods developed can be applied as support in cancer diagnostics by using histopathological images, to locate a breast tumour bed in the context of planning radiotherapy, or as support during brain tumour resection.

It is worth noting that this is not the first success of Dr Marek Wodziński. He has already been distinguished with the Minister’s Scholarship for Excellent Young Scientists and the FNP Start Award; he has successfully acquired and implemented two grants from the National Science Centre and has won several international competitions in the field of artificial intelligence in automated medical image analysis.

The current research of the laureate focuses primarily on the development of new AI methods to analyse histopathological images within the H2020, ExaMode, and IMI BigPicture projects in cooperation with the MedGIFT research team from Switzerland. Furthermore, he participates in research related to the detection of neurodegenerative diseases using mixed reality within the LIDER project, funded by the National Centre for Research and Development.

The ABB competition has been organised for 19 years. Its purpose is to support top-tier research in Polish universities. Each application is evaluated by an interdisciplinary team of experts.
