AGH University and SAP to launch a digital transformation project

The AGH University has embarked on the next phase of its digital transformation related to improving its key university management systems. This strategic move is part of the AGH University's development plan, which is aimed at improving student and employee services. Within this project, the university is implementing SAP solutions, including those delivered in a cloud-based subscription model. The AGH University is the first Polish university that has decided for such a step.

The digital transformation of the university translates into the need to streamline processes related to financial and asset management, project processing, student orders and payments, as well as HR activities, among many others. The project to implement solutions for the improvement of community service is a response to the growing challenges of operating in the digital age. It caters to the dynamically changing and modernising academic environment, which, like other companies, organisations, and businesses, operates on a daily basis driven by technological solutions. SAP software and technologies are ultimately expected to improve the service of the AGH University community, which comprises a total of nearly 20,000 students and more than 4,000 employees. SAP tools are to be used for example in financial and human resources management.

As explained by Professor Jerzy Lis, the AGH University Rector:

“The digital transformation processes at the AGH University began many years ago with the implementation of tools enhancing scientific, administrative, and research activities. Using SAP takes us to the next level and brings the academic community the solutions it needs to function in the new reality. It also allows for the development of the information society. We are also pleased that we were the first university in Poland to decide to apply cloud solutions, which will soon become the standard for managing large entities.”

The innovative nature of the university’s digital activities is expressed not only in implementations that streamline the organisation of work and administration, but also in the use of solutions that automate certain processes. Their implementation will involve participants of the postgraduate non-degree programme concerning ERP Systems, run at the AGH University for several years now and gaining in popularity year by year. These studies are part of a broad educational offer developed in cooperation with industry experts aimed primarily at students who seek knowledge in the area of comprehensive IT solutions used to manage the resources and business processes of modern organisations.

Marcin Demkiw, Head of Presales at SAP, emphasises that:

“while learning about theory is essential in the educational process, it is crucial to allow students to confront theoretical knowledge with practical application in the world of SAP technology. Students expect that the skills they acquire will enhance their competence and attractiveness in the job market. The AGH University stands out because it uses advanced SAP applications in two ways: as teaching tools in the educational process and in university management. Our cooperation proves that modern technologies are embedded in the DNA of the university, and the AGH University offers its students an excellent learning environment."

The implementation of digital solutions, on the one hand, will allow better management of resources, time, and costs, while the elimination of routine tasks by means of automation will lead to increased efficiency and reduced number of errors. It will be extremely important to improve internal communication and cooperation between different departments and teams through electronic circulation. Digital infrastructure will also enable faster adaptation to the ever-changing business environment and facilitate the introduction of new solutions and strategies. The project is planned to be completed by 2026. The partner in the entire process of digital transformation of the AGH University based on SAP solutions is Axians IT Services Poland.
