AGH University visits Peru. Three new agreements with PUCP

AGH University representatives have recently participated in the World Mining Congress 2026 in Peru, one of the most important international events dedicated to the future of the raw materials and mining sector. The visit provided an opportunity to strengthen cooperation with the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), one of the leading universities in Latin America.

The meetings resulted in the signing of three agreements, offering new opportunities for the development of scientific, educational, and international cooperation between the two institutions. AGH University and PUCP have concluded:

  • a memorandum of understanding,
  • an agreement under the Erasmus+ KA171 programme,
  • and a cooperation agreement under the SMILE programme.

Founded in 1917, PUCP is Peru’s leading university and one of the highest-ranked higher education institutions in the region. In the QS World University Rankings 2026, it is ranked 345th in the world and 15th in the QS rankings for Latin America and the Caribbean. The university educates over 27,000 students and conducts cutting-edge research in fields such as engineering, natural sciences, technology, and Earth sciences.

These agreements build upon and formalise the successful collaboration established between the two universities to date. Between 2023 and 2025, AGH University, and more specifically the Faculty of Energy and Fuels, co-implemented the I-MAT project, Innovative Mobility Attracting Tools for Latin America, in collaboration with PUCP, funded under the Erasmus+ programme. Its aim was to develop innovative tools to support academic mobility between Europe and Latin America.

The new agreements will allow improved student and staff mobility, the implementation of joint research projects, and the development of cooperation in areas of strategic importance to both universities. Building and expanding relations with partners in Latin America is an important component of the internationalisation strategy of AGH University.

The meeting at PUCP was chaired by the university’s rector, Dr Julio del Valle. Other participants on the Peruvian side were Dr María Antonieta Delgado, Dr Alberto Ferrand Noriega, Professor Rolf Grieseler, and César Miranda Vargas. In turn, AGH University was represented by Professor Jerzy Lis, Rector; Professor Rafał Wiśniowski, Vice-Rector for Cooperation; Professor Marek Borowski, Coordinator for Cooperation with Latin America and Magalhaes Network; and Paweł Świerk, Director of the Centre for International Affairs. Agata Kulesza, Secretary General of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools (CRASP), also attended the meeting.

The World Mining Congress 2026 was held in Lima from 24 to 26 June under the theme "Mining for the Future". The debates focused on the key challenges facing the modern extractive sector, including efficient management of natural resources, implementation of innovative technologies, responsible extraction of raw materials, and building public trust in the industry.

During the congress, representatives of AGH University held talks with delegates from leading Polish companies in the raw materials and mining sectors, as well as with government officials and academic staff from universities in Germany, Austria, Czechia, and Slovakia. The newly established contacts may lead to joint research and educational projects, as well as to further strengthening of cooperation between academia and industry.
