AGH University delegation visits Scottish universities

A delegation from the AGH University of Krakow made a study visit to Scotland in August 2025 with the aim of enhancing academic collaboration and developing joint research initiatives. The AGH University delegation featured Professor Jerzy Lis, Rector, Professor Rafał Wiśniowski, Vice-Rector for Cooperation, and Professor Janusz Szpytko, Director of the UNESCO AGH Chair.

They visited three Scottish universities: Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, and the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) in Inverness. In each institution, university representatives learnt about ongoing research projects, visited specialised laboratories, and held discussions on opportunities for cooperation in research and student education.

During discussions with experts in various fields, especially engineering, new forms of cooperation were discussed, taking into account sustainable development goals in line with the 2030 Agenda. Particular attention was paid to the potential for joint initiatives between Scottish universities and the UNESCO AGH Chair. The meetings provided an opportunity to learn about innovative projects implemented in Scottish research centres and practical solutions to support quality of life and environmental protection.

The results of the visit are letters of intent signed with Heriot-Watt University and the University of Strathclyde. The cooperation with the University of the Highlands and Islands was initiated in 2017 and renewed in 2023.

The UK leaving the European Union and the COVID-19 pandemic have affected international relations to date, including cooperation between universities. The visit was of particular significance in this regard, as it was an opportunity to reconnect with partners and establish new academic relationships.
