10th Winter School of Energy Engineering with SIT

The 10th edition of the Polish-Japanese Winter School of Energy Engineering, an event organised by the AGH University of Krakow with Shibaura Institute of Technology in Tokio (SIT), was held on 14–24 February 2024.

The SIT is in the prestigious group of 37 global Japanese universities which received special funds from the Japanese government for internationalisation. One of the means for the implementation of the internationalisation strategy are winter and summer schools organised with the AGH University.

The programme of winter schools was prepared with the possibility of improving Japanese students’ language skills in mind. They participate in an intense English course in Krakow prepared under the supervision of Rafał Głowacz, an experienced senior lector at the Department of Foreign Languages of the AGH University. Another aim of the winter schools is to prepare Polish and Japanese students to work in international teams, which is made possible by project classes organised in mixed groups. The substantive part of the project is controlled by experienced employees from the AGH University and the SIT.

The overarching goal of the winter and summer schools is to encourage students to consider further participation in an exchange and enhance the cooperation between the two institutions. The originators and initiators of the initiative were Professor Janusz Szmyd, coordinator for the cooperation with Japan, and Professor Akito Takasaki, Vice President of the SIT.

Japanese universities are strategic partners for the AGH University. Currently, our university is particularly focused on developing the cooperation with Japan in advanced energy technologies. For a few years now, this work has been carried out with Japan Coal Energy Center (JCOAL), Institute of Industrial Science at the University of Tokyo, Faculty of Engineering Kyoto University. It is worth mentioning that besides the aforementioned area of advanced energy technologies, the cooperation with Japanese science centres also concerns materials engineering, information and telecommunication technologies (ICT), as well as space technologies.

The cooperation between the AGH University and the SIT has a long tradition. The bilateral agreement between the AGH University and the SIT was concluded in 2004. In May this year, we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of our cooperation.

Let us remind you that since 2022 the AGH University and the Shibaura Institute of Technology from Tokio has jointly offer a second-cycle degree programme in Energy and Environmental Engineering. The programme results in obtaining a double diploma. This means that after defending the diploma thesis the student obtains a Master of Science in Engineering degree (magister inżynier) at the AGH University and a Master of Science in Engineering (修士(理工学) degree at the SIT, making the course unique in Poland.
