AGH UST starts cooperation with the SWPS University

The AGH UST signed an agreement on cooperation with the SWPS University. Both institutions plan to collaborate to create and implement an education offer and carry out interdisciplinary research projects.

For the AGH UST in Krakow, cooperation with the SWPS University means an expansion of our past activity, especially in the fields of sociology and culture and religion studies, as well as an answer to the socioeconomic needs. For many years, following the best technical universities in the world, we have also been successfully developing the humanities. All the more so right now, with the support of such a prominent institution, we will be able to expand our activity with new projects and joint fields of study’, says Professor Jerzy Lis, AGH UST Rector.

New possibilities open up for the two universities. The cooperation will revolve around the creation of fields of study that will supplement the current education offer in disciplines such as psychology, law, sociology, culture studies, and information and communication technology. The universities will be able to present a joint offer of non-degree postgraduate programmes and trainings. The agreement opens doors to initiating and carrying out joint interdisciplinary research and R&D projects.

Interdisciplinarity and cooperation of two different academic centres is a necessary condition for designing new fields of study, and for planning and implementing research projects that provide answers to social and economic problems. The cooperation between our two universities creates new opportunities not only for the academic environment, but also for our partners with and for whom we want to conduct educational and research activities. Our universities are open for this kind of cooperation’, says Professor Roman Cieślak, SWPS University Rector.

On the part of the SWPS University, the cooperation between the two universities will be coordinated by a newly established Faculty of Psychology in Krakow, a branch of the SWPS University.

The AGH UST is an excellent research university. It is a technical university that appreciates the significance of social sciences and humanities in the creation of technological solutions and in academic teaching. The AGH UST Faculty of Humanities employs exceptional researchers and teachers and evolves rapidly. Signing an agreement on cooperation with such a university is for the SWPS University a reason for satisfaction and hope for joint projects. We will be cooperating to create a new education offer, for instance, new fields of study, non-degree postgraduate programmes, and academic courses. We will also consider joint research projects. As Dean of the SWPS Faculty of Psychology in Krakow, I will do my best to give substance to all the provisions of this agreement’, says Professor Edward Nęcka, Dean of the Faculty of Psychology.

The cooperation will have multifarious forms. The universities declare that they will support each other in the creation of an education offer and establish interuniversity task and project teams. The agreement also implies an expansion in the area of student activity and collaboration in organising academic and scientific events.

‘On the part of the AGH UST, the cooperation will be coordinated by the Faculty of Humanities, which, for more than 20 years, has been successfully educating sociologists, cultural experts, and socially-oriented computer scientists; and recently also specialists in forensic science. At the faculty, we are consistently implementing a research and education profile based on the cooperation of scientists representing social sciences and the humanities with the representatives of technical and exact sciences related to technological and social innovation. The cooperation with the SWPS University will allow us to expand our interdisciplinary research activity once again. It will also enrich our education offer implemented in various forms’, says Professor Barbara Gąciarz, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities.

The first students of the newly established SWPS Faculty of Psychology in Krakow should start their education in October 2023, after the institution receives a positive opinion from the Polish Accreditation Committee.

The SWPS University was established in 1996 and has branches in Sopot, Wrocław, Katowice, and Poznań; and since September 2022, also in Krakow. From September 2022, the university became a founder of the Tischner European University in Krakow and, in a matter of a few years, plans to incorporate its structures into its Krakow branch.
