AGH University and PAA together for nuclear safety

The AGH University and the National Atomic Energy Agency (PAA) concluded an agreement on cooperation aimed at, among others, improving the quality of education in terms of nuclear safety and radiological protection in the fields of study run at the AGH University.

The long-term cooperation involves the following actions:

  • exchange of information and popularisation of the possibility of advancing and improving professional qualifications of the University and Agency employees in nuclear safety and radiological protection;
  • improvement of the quality of education in terms of nuclear safety and radiological protection in the fields of study run at the AGH University;
  • work placements for students in the National Atomic Energy Agency;
  • organisation of joint scientific conferences, seminars, trainings related to nuclear safety and radiological protection;
  • methodological as well as project and programming issues within nuclear safety and radiological protection.

On the part of the AGH University, the agreement will be performed by the Faculty of Energy and Fuels represented by Dr Eng. Paweł Gajda who explains as follows:

“The prospect of implementing atomic energy in Poland creates new challenges. It is crucial to prepare appropriate personnel not only for the plants but also for supervisory institutions and science. That is why a close cooperation between various parties to the nuclear programme and the exchange of experiences is so important. The cooperation with PAA will allow for an even better preparation of our staff and the education process in the field of nuclear safety and radiological protection, as well as the implementation of relevant research conducted at the AGH University. What is more, we have a wealth of experience in the technology of nuclear reactors and in a variety of related issues significant for the atomic programme, such as applications of nuclear techniques, radiological protection, studying materials for the purpose of nuclear energy."

As the President of the National Atomic Energy Agency, Andrzej Głowacki, added:

“The matter of strengthening the staff is currently of the essence for us. As a nuclear supervisory body which oversees nuclear facilities in Poland, already controls nearly eight thousand activities that use ionizing radiation in Poland, and is to supervise the construction and operation of nuclear power plants in the country, we rely on qualified and educated personnel. At present, the labour market lacks specialists with the competencies the nuclear sector desires. Therefore, any initiative that supports the education process in the area of nuclear safety and radiological protection is particularly valuable to the National Atomic Energy Agency. We are pleased that our partner in this strategic area is the highly reputable AGH University of Krakow."

For several dozens of years, the AGH University in Krakow has offered education in the area of nuclear energy. In response to the growing need for specialists in the field, Nuclear Energy has become a separate second-cycle field of study at the Faculty of Energy and Fuels from this academic year.

The signatories to the agreement were the AGH University Vice-Rector for Cooperation, Prof. Rafał Wiśniowski, and the PAA President, Andrzej Głowacki.
