Flag Day – impressions on the independent Poland. Exhibition opening in the Main Library
  • 16.04.2024

The AGH University Main Library would like to invite you to the opening of an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Maria Baster-Grząślewicz dedicated to the “Flag Day – impressions on the independent Poland”, held on 16 April at 1.00 p.m. in the Main Library’s exhibition room. You may visit the exhibition from 8 April until 10 May 2024.

Maria Baster-Grząślewicz – doctor of physics, long-time academic teacher, painter, poet, actress... From a young age, she has combined her scientific and social passions with various artistic activities. Co-founder of a theatre she also played in. She starred in several films and also writes poetry. She published two books of poetry illustrated with her own drawings.

She believes that the essence of art is expression, the ability to express one's own emotions and one's own attitude to reality. In her artwork, she tries to present the idea of objects rather than their photographic description, to record subjective impressions rather than an objective view of events. She uses a variety of painting techniques, but she particularly favours a mixed technique: ink, pastels, acrylics. Her paintings were presented at about 30 solo exhibitions in various cities (Krakow, Wroclaw, Warsaw, Vilnius) and almost 140 national and international collective exhibitions and art festivals.

“In the impressions and contemporary landscapes, I try to convey my painting reflection on what remains of that dreamed-of, reborn Second Republic of Poland, the homeland of my parents. What was it like with its former borders, so different from the ones we know today? What was it like? What is left, what is not gone... I would like to dedicate the exhibition to the memory of my parents and to the memory of all those for whom the red and white flag has always been sacred,” claims the artist.
