Launch of AGH University Student Construction Centre

The AGH University has just launched its Student Construction Centre. The new facility on the campus map is predominantly intended for students who want to put their ideas, from the design phase to creating prototypes, into life.

Lathes, milling machines, welding machines, printers, heat treatment furnaces are just some of the specialistic equipment that the AGH University students will be able to use on a daily basis. The equipment in the Technology Park is worth a total of nearly PLN 1.5 million.

At the grand opening, the AGH University Rector, Professor Jerzy Lis, emphasises that:

"Owing to the Student Construction Centre, practical education enters a new, more advanced stage. We provide our student community with a space that will certainly be the place where groundbreaking ideas are born, innovations improve projects, and the first student companies are established, which, as we know, later evolve into spin-offs and then large, thriving businesses. Places like this unleash enormous potential in young people. It boosts creativity and allows them to develop bold projects in an independent but also group work environment. I am sure that the new place will only accelerate implementations, and it is possible that this is where truly revolutionary technological solutions will be born."

The Student Construction Centre is divided into two sections, design and construction, which are spread over two floors of the building. The usable area of the building is 1400 m2. The design section is intended for all AGH University research clubs, thus for the students working on their projects. The second, construction, section is equipped with the equipment necessary to carry out projects, such as: lathes, milling machines, welding machines, sandblasting machines, a painting chamber, a hydraulic press, a laser cutter, a grinder, a band saw, a specialised drilling machine, or a 3D printer.

As explained by Franciszek Karłowicz, chair of the Council of Student Research Clubs:

"For our nearly 140 student research clubs, the Centre translates into a number of new opportunities to develop and work on inventions. The launch of this building complex is particularly important for smaller clubs that cannot afford such professional workshop equipment as they will be able to use such at the Centre. I am convinced that this investment will create completely new development paths for many clubs and will help them to meet challenges that were previously unattainable."

The Student Construction Centre is located in the immediate vicinity of the AGH University Student Campus. In the long run, the Centre is to be a place where on-going projects will be developed even further, but also where new initiatives will arise for the DIANA Defence Innovation Accelerator. The total value of the project is more than PLN 16 million, of which PLN 10 million come from a target grant from the Ministry of Education and Science.
