Why do we need science

What is the social responsibility of the university? How should its relations with the environment look like? What can the new space offer the mankind?

AGH University – university of values

Previous university models have been focused on producing knowledge and transferring it within the university. However, making research results available is equally important as educating students. As a technical institution, the AGH University has been cooperating with economy by sharing scientific research results and solutions for the Polish industry. Today, it is worth to expand this attempt to transfer knowledge outside of the university also by disseminating science and bringing the researchers closer to the public. Besides pursuing truth and solving problems, a modern university should also be on a social mission which arises directly from the responsibility to the community. With that in mind, it can not limit itself only to producing scientific papers, but it should also create right attitudes and spread pro-social values.

Professor Jerzy Lis
Rector of the AGH University of Krakow. Scientifically associated with the Faculty of Materials Science and Ceramics, where he graduated under the supervision of Professor Roman Pampuch, one of the pioneers of materials engineering in Poland. His research interests focus mainly on the technology of obtaining advanced and classical ceramic materials, especially with the use of the SHS method of rapid combustion-type chemical reactions. Member of many Polish and international associations including The World Academy of Ceramics and correspondent of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

New Space – way to sustainable development

Mankind is searching for effective technologies and methods for sustainable development, including those dedicated to improving human living conditions and protecting the natural environment on Earth. One of the alternatives is to use space technology both for space exploration, to search for and exploit vast resources on other planets and asteroids, and to provide humans with access to global navigation or telecommunications solutions, to monitor environmental changes on Earth, to improve the quality of field cultivation, so that humans could have better access to healthy food and undamaged nature. Over the past forty years, space science and technology have been liberating people from “earthly” limitations; now, they can also free people from “deficiencies.”

Professor Tadeusz Uhl
Director of the AGH University Space Technology Centre. His scientific activity focuses mainly on mechatronics, construction monitoring and diagnostics. For many years now, he has been transforming knowledge and research results into practice by running EC Grupa, a company implementing innovative projects in high technologies for clients from all over the world.  Member of numerous prestigious scientific organisations. The first Pole appointed to participate in the works of the High Level Group on Key Enabling Technologies, acting within the European Commission, the goal of which is to set development directions for modern branches of European economy as part of the new Horizon 2020 programme.
