Extraterrestrial resources – how to reach for them?

What natural resources can be found on asteroids and the Moon? Will space mining be implemented into life soon? What is the legal status of extraterrestrial raw materials deposits?

Space mining – business, technology, and social perspective

Space mining arouses extreme emotions, from great enthusiasm to scepticism. Claims such as “space mining – maybe in 50 or 100 years” are not so uncommon. What is the case with space mining? Are we technologically ready to exploit space commercially? The invited expert will try to answer these and other questions in his lecture, beginning from the explanation of what space mining means but also what things of value may be found in space. He will also discuss whether space mining is possible still in this decade and what benefits it may bring to the society. Another matter that is brought up is whether Poland may join the race for space resources and what the possible obstacles and challenges are. Besides the scientific and technological perspective, the business one is also presented.

Space material in legal transactions

A space raw material, sometimes referred to as a space resource, is one of the subjects of legal regulations and considerations of legal sciences in the context of space law. Most of them focus on the regulation and permissibility of the mining activity itself, but the legal status of the extracted material will affect other areas of economic circulation in space (or using space). The presentation is supposed to show how the legal status of the space raw material will influence the actions related to its import, placing it on the market on Earth, but also using it as part of the OSAM (On-orbit Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing) activities in space.
