The resources of Prometheus, one of the fastest supercomputers in Poland, have been used for the purpose of accessing satellite information about the environment. The Sat4Envi project was set up with the participation of the AGH UST Academic Computer Centre CYFRONET, which was responsible, inter alia, for developing a database of satellite information and its effective searching and making it available.
The main objective of the Sat4Envi project, in which the resources of Prometheus have been used, is providing access the satellite data of the European programme Copernicus, as well as information from other environmental and meteorological satellites. The Internet address dane.sat4envi.imgw.pl offers a User Service System, which is a browser-based tool designed for accessing satellite information. Thanks to the platform, the user can search, view, and download various satellite data.
The system is mainly designed for monitoring the surface of the Earth, the atmosphere, and the weather, as well as recognising meteorological threats. Thanks to the application of special layers, for example, ones that encompass the boundaries of administrative areas, the tool is also useful for public administration and regional institutions. The analysis of satellite information in almost real time may also be of key importance for forecasting, monitoring and counteracting the effects of natural disasters. In particular, this type of monitoring is important in the case of floods, the evaluation of damages caused by fires, or monitoring agricultural damages being a result of droughts or frosting. Owing to the necessity of a quick response in this kind of situations, the Sat4Envi project takes into account the needs of special user groups, such as the Crisis Information Centre. Thanks to processed satellite images collected by the service, it will be possible to take effective prevention measures connected with natural disasters.
“The role of the AGH UST Academic Computer Centre CYFRONET in the project was to carry out programming tasks connected with the building and maintenance of the User Service System, as well as providing IT infrastructure indispensable for collecting data and making it available to others. Cyfronet is the operator of an Internet connection with IMGW-PIB Krakow (Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute), and within the framework of the PLGrid Infrastructure, it enables access to computing power necessary for the proper operation of Sat4Envi. At the same time, Cyfronet’s supercomputer Prometheus is used for processing and developing information from raw satellite data,” says professor Kazimierz Wiatr, Director of the AGH UST Academic Computer Centre Cyfronet.
The leader of the Sat4Envi project is the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute, and the project partners are the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Polish Space Agency, and the AGH UST Academic Computer Centre Cyfronet. The project, whose total value equals PLN 17,903,900, is co-financed from the European Regional Development Fund within the framework of the Operational Programme “Digital Poland”.
Access to all data and information is free of charge.
