Shanghai Ranking 2022. The AGH UST once again among the best universities in the world

In the most recent edition of the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), otherwise known as the Shanghai Ranking, 1,000 leading higher education institutions in the world have been classified, including 11 universities from Poland. Our university has climbed the ladder compared to the last year’s edition and was classified in the 601–700 rank range. This gives us the best position among Polish technical universities.

The best universities in Poland are the Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw (rank range: 401–500). In the ranking, behind the AGH UST are: Gdańsk University of Technology, Warsaw University of Life Sciences, and Wroclaw Medical University (rank range: 801–900). In the last hundred, the following universities have been classified: Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Medical University of Warsaw, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Warsaw University of Technology, and Wrocław University of Science and Technology.

The top 10 of the ranking has been dominated by American institutions – there are eight of them at the top. The best university in the world, according to the ARWU, is Harvard University; second place went to Stanford, and third to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Two British universities made it to the top 10: the University of Cambridge (fourth place) and the University of Oxford (seventh place).

The exact place in the ranking is given only for the first 100 of the best universities. Other institutions are listed in groups of 50 or 100.

The ARWU ranking takes into consideration the following criteria: the number of graduates (and separately the number of employees) who received the Nobel Prize or the Fields Medal, the number of publications in Nature and Science, the number of highly cited researchers, and the number of publications from selected citation indexes (Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index). The classification measures the size of academic achievement compared to the size of the university.
