The new building of the Department of Telecommunications at the AGH UST Faculty of Computer Science, Electronics and Telecommunications will be used for education- and research-related purposes in the areas connected with telecommunications, information and communications technology, and cybersecurity. It will have laboratories that will meet educational needs being in line with the latest trends in the field of telecommunications: ultrafast computer networks, wireless communication standards and systems for mobile devices LTE 4G/5G, and ICT networks. Moreover, students will be able to use the laboratories and workshops of optical networks, the Internet of things, software-controlled networks and virtualisation of network functions, as well as programmable radio and virtual reality.

The ceremony of laying the cornerstone for the new development took place on 8th January 2018. The building, whose cubic volume exceeds 11 thousand m3 and usable area is more than 2 thousand m2, is located at 74 Czarnowiejska St. On four floors of the building, the architects have designed space for lecture rooms and classrooms, laboratories, conference rooms, as well as technical and maintenance rooms. The project is worth PLN 21 million, of which 13 million have been subsidized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Each laboratory has four local server rooms, equipped in total with 32 telecommunication racks and cabinets of high load capacity, which will enable the installation of IT and telecommunication equipment of total weight equal to 32 tons and total electric power / cooling capacity equal to 80kW. The building is supplied by two independent power lines. Additionally, there are two independent emergency power systems. The process of equipping the teaching laboratories in the building will begin in the next few weeks.

The Faculty of Computer Science, Electronics and Telecommunications is one of AGH UST’s leading units. In 2017, it obtained category A+, which is awarded to faculties which demonstrate an outstanding quality in the area of research and development. In the field of information and communications technology, the category was awarded to no more than two faculties in Poland. Every year, study programmes offered by the Faculty of Computer Science, Electronics and Telecommunications are very popular with AGH UST prospective students, which is evidenced by high entry requirements for such fields of study as Computer Science and Teleinformatics, and a high number of candidates for one place.
