Useful quasicrystals? On novel aluminium alloys – seminar

Academic Centre for Materials and Nanotechnology AGH UST invites for a seminar that will be held on 28th November, 2019, at 4.00 pm.

A lecture titled “ Useful quasicrystals? On novel aluminium alloys” will be given by Katarzyna Stan-Głowińska, DSc form Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of Polish Academy of Sciences in Krakow.

Venue: Academic Centre for Materials and Nanotechnology AGH UST (Kawiory 30 Street, building D-16, auditorium room 1.02A)

An abstract of the lecture

The aim of the presentation is to give an overview of a novel group of materials - aluminium alloys strengthened by quasicrystalline phases. Since the discovery of the quasicrystalline phase in the 80’s, attempts are being made to utilize this unusual state of solid matter in various areas. One of the most promising are aluminium alloys where formation of a quasicrystalline phase could introduce new properties superior to conventionally used equivalents. The presentation will focus on various techniques which are being used to produce such materials, and the results which were obtained so far in this area. The presentation will try to address present challenges in this field.
