Ceremony of conferral of the title of AGH UST Honorary Professor upon Wojciech Górecki

On December 17, 2021 at 12:00 in the AGH UST Assembly Hall, Professor Wojciech Górecki, a specialist in the fields of exploration of oil and gas deposits, as well as the recognition and use of geothermal waters and energy, will receive the title of AGH UST Honorary Professor.

Professor Wojciech Górecki

He is a specialist in the field of oil and gas exploration, as well as the recognition and use of geothermal waters and energy. His entire professional life, that is, more than 50 years, he has been associated with the AGH UST and the oil and gas industry. He authored more than 220 publications, specialised studies, textbooks, expert opinions, and projects in the fields of oil and gas and energy for parliament committees, government agencies, and companies. His articles, published in renowned scientific journals, were related to the recognition of conditions for potential hydrocarbon deposits in the Cambrian, Devonian/Carboniferous, and Lower Permian reservoirs in Poland. He co-authored research into oil- and gas-bearing Miocene reservoirs in the pre-Carpathian depression. Professor Wojciech Górecki boasts considerable achievement in the fields of modern oil geology and the optimisation of petroleum exploration. An important facet of his long-term activity was facing challenges in various areas, including the exploration of tight and shale gases. Conceiver, scientific editor, and co-author of eight geothermal atlases that encompass Poland’s geological formations, and a co-author of Atlas of Geothermal Resources in Europe. Co-author of projects focusing on the use of geothermal waters in numerous towns in the Polish Lowlands, the pre-Carpathian depression, and the Carpathians.

Initiator and coordinator of the construction of the AGH UST Centre of Sustainable Development and Conservation of Energy in Miękinia, Poland. Laureate of numerous awards for outstanding research achievements. Doctor Honoris Causa of the Baku State University (1998) for the totality of his professional achievement and for research cooperation. Honorary Professor of the Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas, Ukraine (2012). On January 29, 2020, the AGH UST Senate conferred upon Professor Wojciech Górecki the title of AGH UST Honorary Professor.

On June 4, 2012 in Copenhagen, Professor Górecki received the prestigious Alfred Wegener Medal awarded by the President of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (the largest organisation in the world of specialists in Earth sciences) for the totality of his exceptional research and scientific achievements in the fields of oil geology and geothermics. Professor Górecki held numerous public offices, was a member of esteemed state and scientific committees, and chaired the advisory team to one of the largest oil and gas company in Poland. He was also an advisor to many foreign oil companies, including Atlantic Richfield Company, Apache Corporation, and many others.

Professor Górecki held numerous positions at the AGH UST, including vice-director for science of the Institute of Fossil Fuels and later, for 20 years, the head of the Department of Fossil Fuels. He also advised the Polish Prime Minister, Vice-Prime Minister, and Minister of the Economy.
