Biography of Professor Andrzej Łędzki

Professor Andrzej Łędzki was born in Krakow. He graduated from the AGH UST Faculty of Metallurgy, obtaining the Master of Science in Engineering degree in the field of metallurgy, with a specialisation in the metallurgy of crude steel and steel. In 1968, he was employed at the AGH UST Department of Crude Steel as an assistant. Having completed his one-year internship, he began his doctoral studies. In 1972, after defending his dissertation related to silicon distribution between iron and blast-furnace slag in liquid phases under chemical equilibrium, he obtained the degree of doctor in the field of technical sciences. In the same year, he was employed as an assistant professor in the Blast Furnace Department of the AGH UST Institute of Metallurgy.

In 1986, he obtained postdoctoral qualifications for his work on the reactions of titanium in a blast furnace. Two years later, he was nominated to take the position of an assistant professor at the AGH UST. In 1992, he was appointed an associate professor at the AGH UST. In 1996, he received the title of full professor, and in 2001, he was nominated to the position of professor at the AGH UST.

The scientific activity of Professor Łędzki focuses on the following issues: reduction of liquid-phase silicon, manganese, and titanium; reduction of sinters and pellets and their structures; physical and chemical properties of TiO2-doped blast-furnace slags; behaviour of alkalis during sintering and blast-furnace processes; physical properties of pellets and sinters with high basicity; recycling of metallurgical waste; gas-dust emission in iron metallurgy processes; blast-furnace process modelling; properties and engineering of TiO2-doped carbon materials; smelting processes of liquid iron and steel.

In total, Professor Łędzki authored and co-authored 140 scientific publications, including 45 international and 93 in Poland, one monograph, four textbooks, four patents, 102 research papers and expert opinions, and 16 successful industrial implementations. He was the leader or chief executor of five projects carried out by the State Committee for Scientific Research, as well as multiple jobs for the industry.

He has been and remains closely connected to the metallurgical industry. He was a consultant to the presidents of Huta Katowice S.A. and Huta im. T. Sendzimira S.A., a member of the presidium and chair of a section of the Metallurgy Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences; he was also a member of the Metallurgy, Foundry, and Metal Processing section of the State Committee for Scientific Research.

Between 1991 and 1996, he was Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering. From December 1998, he served as acting Vice-Rector of the AGH UST; between 1999 and 2002, he was Vice-Rector for General Affairs; and between 2002 and 2005, he was Vice-Rector for Education.

For his scientific, implementational, educational, and organisational activities, he has received many awards, including the highest Polish and Krakow decorations.

Biography of Professor Janusz Łuksza

Professor Janusz Łuksza has been associated with the AGH UST since 1969, when he graduated from the Faculty of Metallurgy. In 2002, he obtained the title of full professor in the field of technical sciences. He is a renowned specialist in phenomena and processes occurring during plastic processing of metals. On this subject, he authored numerous research papers, articles, monographs, and patents. He carried out many research and implementation projects commissioned by the metal processing industry, including some that merit special mention, i.e. projects related to the modernisation and restructuring of the Polish metallurgical and machine industries. In the academic year 1978/1979, Professor Łuksza was away on a one-year internship in the United States of America as part of a scholarship funded by Doctor Honoris Causa Tadeusz Sendzimir, with the help of the Kosciuszko Foundation. At Lehigh University in Betlehem, USA, under the supervision of the world-renowned Professor B. Avitzur, he investigated the application of the upper-bound theorem in theoretical analyses of plastic deformation during metal-forming processes. In 1982, he was a British Council fellow at the University of Leeds (Great Britain), where he carried out research under the supervision of Professor T. Z. Blazynski, one of the most prominent scientists in the field of mechanichal and metals engineering.

Professor Łuksza has dedicated his entire professional life to the development of his Alma Mater. The effects of his activities include the restructuring of the Faculty of Metallurgy, which transformed into the Faculty of Materials Engineering, to finally become the Faculty of Metals Engineering and Industrial Computer Science. He initiated the creation of new fields of study, modification of study programmes, and modernisation of laboratories.

During his time at the AGH UST, he held numerous leading and organisational positions. Between 1989–1990 and 1993–1996, he was Vice-Dean, and then between 1996–2002 Dean, of the Faculty of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering. From 1996 to 2012, he headed the Department of Plastic Metal Processing. Since 1996, he has been a member of the AGH UST Senate, where, between 2005 and 2012, he chaired the Committee for Budget.

Professor Łuksza has also been active outside of the university walls. He was a member and chairperson of a number of associations, committees, and supervisory boards related to the metallurgical industry. His rich activity in favour of the AGH UST, as well as the academic community and economic circles, has been abundantly awarded on numerous occasions with various distinctions and honours, including some of the most important scientific and state medals in Poland.
