AGH UST and Polish Space Agency concluded an agreement on cooperation

Joint research projects in the field of space exploration, scientific conferences, mutual expert support, exchange of ideas and experiences, as well as work placements for the AGH UST students at POLSA – these are the main points of the agreement on cooperation signed today between the AGH University of Science and Technology and Polish Space Agency.

The AGH UST and POLSA declare long-term scientific cooperation, as well as joint organisation of scientific conferences and seminars, joint participation in Polish and international events related to the space sector, and expert support in grant applications. The two institutions also plan to apply together for funding for research and R&D projects. The AGH UST students will also have the opportunity to apply for work placement at POLSA.

‘The agreement we signed today with the Polish Space Agency is a crucial cooperation, because for several years at the AGH UST, we have been really focused on developing space technologies’, said Prof. Jerzy Lis, AGH UST Rector. ‘We are currently constructing the headquarters of our Space Technology Centre, which has been operating for two years now, where our scientists and students will have perfect conditions to carry out research related to the space sector. Thanks to the cooperation with POLSA, also our student organisations, among others, AGH Space Systems or SpaceTeam AGH, will have even greater possibilities for development. We have ambitious research plans and are thrilled to be able to implement them with such a competent partner’.

According to Prof. Grzegorz Wrochna, President of POLSA: ‘Cooperation with strong academic research centres interested in developing competencies in the fields of research and innovation constitutes the implementation of a long-term and deliberate strategy of the Agency. In this strategy, POLSA is an active link between the worlds of science and business, becomes a side in international contacts, monitors the most recent trends, and supports educating and acquiring future space staff from Poland’.

The Space Technology Centre has been functioning at the AGH UST since November 2020. Its goals include research and education in the field of space technologies and promotion of space research.

Prof. Tadeusz Uhl, Director of Space Technology Centre adds: ‘The era of “new space” has begun. Ahead of us are challenges related to space missions and the introduction of space technologies into everyday life. Thanks to the cooperation with POLSA, we will have the opportunity to actively participate in the development of technology and the construction of the Polish space potential. For the Space Technology Centre, this agreement has a fundamental meaning because it charts directions in which we have to develop and opens up doors for cooperation with the entire cosmic world’.

The space engineering sector at the AGH UST has also been developed successfully by student research clubs. The AGH Space Systems team is the winner of this year’s European Rover Challenge, a competition for Mars rovers. In turn, students from SpaceTeam AGH came second in the competition for constructing a transport system for Moon regolith, organised in the USA. Recently, the female members of AstroBio AGH participated in the first fully female analogue space mission, taking part in experiments related to food production and water consumption optimisation.
