A letter of intent was signed in relation to the World Copernican Congress

On October 28, 2022, in the JU Collegium Maius Library, representatives of the Krakow academic community, as well as provincial and city authorities, gathered to sign a letter of intent, declaring the willingness to cooperate on the organisation of the official celebration of the 550th birthday of Nicolaus Copernicus, which will include the World Copernican Congress.

The letter of intent was signed by: Prof. Jacek Popiel, JU Rector; Prof. Jerzy Lis, AGH UST Rector; Prof. Stanisław Mazur, KUE Rector; Jerzy Muzyk, Vice-President of the City of Krakow; Witold Kozłowski, Marshal of the Małopolska Province; and Iwona Gibas, member of the Board of the Małopolska Province. The signers established an Honorary Committee for the Celebration. Additionally, the assembled also settled that the Jagiellonian University will be responsible for the Krakow part of the World Copernican Congress 2023 and the accompanying events.

The aim of the World Copernican Congress is to show the current state of research on the life and activity of Nicolaus Copernicus and to expand the knowledge on Copernican investigations – their influence on the development of particular research fields and their historical and cultural dimensions, which brought about a revolution in the contemporary scientific world.

The congress will hold sessions in Toruń, Krakow, and Olsztyn. In each of these cities, sections dedicated to particular groups of researchers will be held. Between May 24 and 26, 2023, Krakow will invite economists, philosophers, and researchers who study the histories of these disciplines. The sessions in Olsztyn will be devoted to the biography of Copernicus, with special emphasis on his education and the Warmia period of his life. The part in Toruń shall gather cultural scientists, literary scholars, and art historians interested in the place of the great astronomer within the broad cultural memory, as well as astronomy and medical sciences historians.

The official opening of the Congress is scheduled to take place on February 19, 2023 in Toruń, on the day of the 550th birthday anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus. The organisers of the Congress include: the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, and the Institute for the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
