Professor Janusz Kowal awarded the degree of Doctor honoris causa by Białystok University of Technology

Professor Janusz Kowal received the honorary degree of Doctor honoris causa awarded by Białystok University of Technology. The official ceremony was held on 12 April 2018.

The Senate of Białystok University of Technology awarded the honorary degree in recognition of the Professor’s achievements in the scope of research work and staff education as well as his major contribution to the development of science and technology.

A prominent scientist, Professor Janusz Kowal is an authority on mechanics, machine construction and operations as well as automation engineering and robotics. He is also the creator of a school of thought in mechanical system control.

This honour is conferred exclusively on those that have made an outstanding contribution to Polish science, prominent scientists, who bring additional glory and honour to Białystok University of Technology as they agree to accept the award – said Professor Lech Dzienis, Rector of Białystok University of Technology, after which he added: On his website, Professor Janusz Kowal posted a quote from Seneca: ‘Non scholae sed vitae discimus’, which translates into English as: ‘We learn not for school but for life’. The Professor’s activity so far has clearly shown that he has remained committed to the idea throughout his life. He strongly advocates the principle which says that the very essence of scientific activity is man and his pursuit of truth rather than science itself. Add to this yet another quote the Professor holds dear: ‘ Amicus Plato, sed magis amica veritas’ which means: ‘Plato is my friend, but truth is a better friend and you will get a complete image of this remarkable scholar, whom we are today presenting with the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa of Białystok University of Technology.

The laudation in honour of the Doctor honoris causa was delivered by his advisor – Professor Andrzej Seweryn, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanics of Białystok University of Technology, who – when presenting an overview of Professor Kowal’s achievements – said:

Today’s ceremony is a great event for the entire community of Białystok University of Technology. The act of conferring the degree of Doctor honoris causa by our University is a tribute to Professor Janusz Kowal and his outstanding research achievements as well as an expression of gratitude for the contribution he has made to the University, related to joint research work, organisation of scientific conferences, our publishing activity and – above all  academic promotion of the research staff at our university. Dear Professor, thank you very much for all your support and thoughtfulness, we wish you the best of luck, good health and further success.

Professor Tadeusz Łagoda of Opole University of Technology, professor Eugeniusz Świtoński of Silesian University of Technology and professor Norbert Sczygiol of Częstochowa University of Technology acted as reviewers of Professor Kowal’s honorary doctorate.

Upon being presented with the title of Doctor honoris causa, Professor Janusz Kowal delivered a lecture on Active Construction Vibration Control, in which he explored the area of his most current scientific interest: mechanical systems dynamics and building construction vibration control.
