The Faculty of Mining and Geoengineering (until 2002 - Faculty of Mining) is the oldest faculty of the  university and was the only faculty when the university was established by Józef Piłsudski in 1919. Until the 50-ies of the 20th century the history of the faculty  is the history of the university.

At present the faculty staff actively works on mining land reclamation, solves problems of economics, organization and management in mining, fights water, gas and heat hazards. The faulty actively collaborates with the industry by exporting Polish know-how to nearly all countries. Apart from that, the faculty deals with an untypical research activity, namely revalorizing and protecting underground infrastructure of historical towns such as Sandomierz or Kłodzko.

The faculty is a co-worker on many general agreements signed with numerous Polish and foreign institutions. These agreements mainly concern R&D collaboration, improving the laboratory basis, students' practical trainings, and mutual employment policy of our graduates. The faculty co-operates with several universities and research centres from Poland and other countries (Russia, France, Germany, Ukraine, Slovakia, the Czech Republic).

Our graduates, depending on the discipline chosen, are prepared to work in units of civil and local administration, centres of environmental protection in companies, and economical departments of companies. They can also be employed in positions involving design and investment in mines and to work underground. Students get full qualifications entitling them to hold top positions in mining companies, including mining supervision and in the companies of underground and mining construction.

The programme of studies at all specialization of Mining and Geology follows all formal and legal requirements for engineers in both underground and open-strip mining.
