Since the origin of the University of Mining and Metallurgy, the Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environment Protection has had its nucleus - three departments existing at the Faculty of Mining Engineering, the only University Faculty of that time. These were: Department of Geology, Department of Mineralogy and Petrography and Department of Applied Geology. After World War II (in 1946) these were included into the newly established Faculty of Geology and Land Surveying, followed by the Faculty of Geology and Mineral Exploration. Throughout years the faculty developed rapidly and its structure underwent many changes. Since 1992 the faculty has been known as the Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environment Protection.

At present the faculty is a kind of humanity among the technical faculties of AGH-UST. It is the only faculty in Poland, which, on one hand, educates the best specialists in applied geology and geophysics and, on the other, offers the type of education typical for universities, namely tourism and computer science. Our graduates can find a job in industry, research centres, schools, tourist offices and administration. The faculty leads mostly applied research. We have the largest number of professors and associate professors (Doctor Habilitatus) of geology in Europe, also doctors and assistants. Such staff, helped by the well-equipped laboratories make it possible to deal with virtually any research task. The faculty deals also with basic research work, i.e. the work which helps us understand the world around us and its phenomena better, but the results of which cannot be used in practice because of the insufficient level of knowledge. Among our staff members we can find former Fulbright and Humboldt scholarship holders.
