Social-Economic Sciences and Humanities:

The research group of "Social-economic and humanities" comprises five research subject areas: management and marketing, economics, information society, sociology, psychology and philosophy, and political and historical sciences. Research in these fields is conducted by the following faculties: Faculty of Management, Faculty of Mining and Geoengineering (within the framework of the Department of Economics and Management in Industry), and Faculty of Humanities.

A characteristic feature of research conducted at AGH-UST within the scope of management and economics is its diversity and interdisciplinarity. Good collaboration with industry and service-providing businesses, as well as familiarity with their needs allow the university to prepare a suitable research offer. In order to stimulate the interdisciplinary co-operation of scientists and researchers, the Centre for Coordination of Research has been established. The Centre monitors Polish and international research programmes.

Research in the field of management concentrates on economic, financial and environmental aspects of the transformation of economy, controlling the management processes in Poland and the European Union, research into the effectiveness and risks on capital markets, and the marketing and economics of production processes.

AGH-UST develops the application of modern mathematical methods and information technologies for the purpose of optimising decision-making processes in production, services and logistics. Research is also conducted into the problems of social responsibility in business and the diagnosis of corporate organisational culture. A vast part of research is conducted at the Computer Laboratory for Enhancing Production Processes, the Laboratory for the Automation of Processes, the Laboratory of Integrated Management Processes, and the Laboratory for Modelling Decision Processes.

Within the scope of technological offer for industry, the following feasibility studies are prepared: using CNG fuel as fuel for vehicles, the economic effectiveness of using wind power stations, the development of restructuring programmes for industrial plants, as well as the studies of quality, reliability and safety systems management. An important part of research applies to large extractive and manufacturing companies involved in mining, and is based on close collaboration with the industry.

An innovative subject area developed at AGH-UST is research within the scope of humanities, whose characteristic feature is combining knowledge from the field of social sciences and humanities with the knowledge related to modern information and communication technologies applied in various domains of social and economic life. Within the framework of the discipline of information society, the main area of analysis is the influence of communication transformations on management, the functioning of economic organisations, new forms of civic activities in contemporary world and the psychological threats related to the improper use of information technologies. The research area in the field of sociology, psychology and philosophy comprises research into the reflection of economic, social and cultural transformations in contemporary sociology, as well as the cultural peculiarity of philosophy and spirituality. The discipline of political and historical sciences comprises social and political transformations in the 20th and 21st century.

Within the framework of the research areas listed above, projects dealing with the following subjects are conducted: the formation of information society, the qualitative analysis of cultural messages on the example of the analysis of Catholic Church hierarchs' discourse towards the European Union, professional careers of AGH-UST graduates, living conditions and social activities of AGH-UST students with disabilities, the social integration of people with disabilities on the labour market, marriage and family life transformations in Poland, the influence of new technologies on democracy, the institutionalisation of local self-governing bodies in Poland, research into migration on the example of Romany communities, the sociological analysis of the genesis of Polish entrepreneurship, the analysis of the condition of the Polish labour market, as well as the issues of social dialogue. New methodological and research possibilities have been created by the establishment of the Faculty of Humanities Centre for Social Research, whose one of the aims is to conduct research commissioned by external entities.
