The industrial manipulator IRV5, developed by the AGH UST Special Interest Group “Robotics”, won in the category Freestyle at the competition of mobile robots Robomaticon 2017, held in Warsaw.
The robot, assembled by the AGH UST students, spent the entire length of the competition giving out leaflets and sweets, in this way promoting the university and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics. The robot’s activity received a lot of attention from the audience and high praise from the representatives of companies. An obligatory 5-minute presentation of IRV5 on stage was also appreciated by the jurors – the representatives of the competition organisers and sponsors, who awarded the design first place in the category Freestyle, presenting interesting projects in the field of robotics, automatic control engineering, and other related areas. The competition jury assessed: the idea, and the robot’s mechanical design, electronics, use (application), and software.
IRV5 is an in-house project of the members of the AGH UST Student Special Interest Group “Robotics”, developed from scratch both in the area of mechanics, as well as electronics and software. The four-axle industrial manipulator is designed for demonstration and educational purposes, for example, at education fairs, science festivals, or competitions. It enables students to have contact with the real equipment, not only computer simulations. The mechanical construction is based on the structure of a four-bar linkage (pantograph), which makes it possible to limit positioning errors. The power transmission system consists of stepper motors and polymer worm gears made by IGUS. The robot is also equipped with a vacuum gripping device made by Festo. The control system is based on Arduino Due and Raspberry Pi. The control panel can be accessed through a special-purpose website on a computer or tablet.
Robomaticon 2017 was organised on 4th March 2017 at the Warsaw University of Technology. The event was entered by over 100 participants, who competed in nine categories.
